About the mapmaker

This map was published on 1st September 1787 by J Cary, engraver and map seller, of Arundel Street, Strand, London. At the time of publishing, John Cary was only 23 years of age and this was among the first maps he published on finishing his apprenticeship in London. Cary published widely and came to be regarded as one of the leading English cartographers of his time. He and his brother were also globemakers.

The map shows Chichester to be the largest settlement in the whole of Sussex in 1787.
