One of the most significant roles of a Lord-Lieutenant is to support and promote individuals and organisations working on a voluntary basis for the benefit of the community.
The Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Susan Pyper, holds positions in a number of charities and voluntary groups based in West Sussex, supporting them all with her advice, attendance at meetings and participation in their activities.
In addition, as part of her regular duties as the county's Lord-Lieutenant, she attends many voluntary sector events each year — for example, to open new projects, to attend annual general meetings or simply to visit and show how much she appreciates their hard work on behalf of the community.
The voluntary sector plays a significant role in all aspects of life within the county, making life better for many of its residents. The Lord-Lieutenant is particularly conscious of that role and takes a particular interest in supporting and promoting its work.
One of the Lord-Lieutenant's initiatives to further that interest has been the setting up of the Lord-Lieutenant's Voluntary Sector Support Group, covered separately in this section of the website.
