The Assistant Clerk to the West Sussex Lieutenancy

The Assistant Clerk is responsible for the day-to-day running and planning of Lieutenancy business. The Assistant Clerk to the West Sussex Lieutenancy is Mr. Paul Legrave.

Paul Legrave studied music at the University of Durham, and went on to pursue a career in arts marketing, taking positions at the Edinburgh Festival, London's South Bank Centre and the Barbican Centre. In 2002 he was appointed as Liturgy and Music Administrator at Chichester Cathedral, with responsibility for arranging many high profile services and concerts. He has served on Chichester Diocesan Synod and has been Churchwarden and Director of Music at Midhurst Parish Church. His interests are opera, theatre, gardening, cooking and travelling to France as often as possible. Paul is married to Shelagh, who is Chief Executive of the Chichester College Group, and a Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex. They have one son.

The duties of the Assistant Clerk may be summarised as follows:

  • Undertaking all the necessary administrative work in connection with the functions of the Lieutenancy including arrangements for Royal visits and a wide variety of other activities and ceremonial duties, including presentations on behalf of Her Majesty.
  • Publishing in the London Gazette and other media as required the names and date of commission of newly appointed Vice Lord-Lieutenants and Deputy Lieutenants.
  • Maintaining the Lieutenancy roll showing the residential qualifications of the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and all Deputy Lieutenants.
  • Preparing the commissions of the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and the Deputy Lieutenants.

The Assistant Clerk currently works on a part-time basis and is based at Edes House, County Hall, West Street, Chichester PO19 1RQ.
